Assam’s Iconic Tea: Battling to Survive Amidst Unprecedented Challenges
Assam’s Tea Industry Grapples with Crises Amid Climate and Economic Challenges
Assam’s once-thriving tea industry, revered for its lush gardens and bold brews, faces severe challenges from climate change and economic pressures. The region’s tea landscapes are rapidly deteriorating due to environmental turmoil and increased operational costs.
Climate change has significantly disrupted Assam’s formerly stable climate. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall have led to extreme weather patterns, causing floods, droughts, and crop damage. In recent years, the average temperature has climbed from 25.1°C to 27.0°C, while annual rainfall has dropped, exacerbating these issues. In 2024, a severe flood reduced tea output by 15%.
Concurrent economic challenges include skyrocketing production costs, with tea prices failing to keep pace. From 2010 to 2024, production costs surged from ₹80 to ₹140 per kilogram, squeezing profit margins. Labour shortages further compound the issue, as younger generations seek better opportunities beyond the tea gardens, leading to delayed plucking and reduced tea quality.
Export difficulties add another layer of complexity. Global conflicts and sanctions have reduced tea exports, especially to Iran and Russia, impacting revenue. Moreover, the quality decline due to a rise in brought-leaf factories focusing on quantity over quality hasn’t helped.
To combat these challenges, there is a push for sustainable practices and economic reforms. Innovations in tea cultivation, such as climate-resilient varieties and AI-assisted agriculture, are crucial for adaptation. The government is urged to implement policies for better living conditions for tea workers and promote tea tourism as a potential economic booster.
Looking forward, the path to reviving Assam’s tea industry involves collective efforts to embrace sustainable strategies, protect natural resources, and support tea community development. This multifaceted approach is essential for ensuring the industry’s resilience in the face of mounting adversities.
