Historic Reconciliation: Meghalaya and Assam CMs Unite in Post-Election Summit to Resolve Border Dispute
Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to meet with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma following the district council elections to address unresolved interstate border disputes in six areas. Sangma revealed that he had an informal conversation with Sarma, who sought proposed dates for the meeting after the conclusion of the elections.
The ongoing interstate border issues between Meghalaya and Assam have been longstanding, contributing to tensions over the decades. Although both states have established regional committees to tackle these complex boundary disputes, the second phase of negotiations has stalled for over two years, reportedly due to Assam’s previous reluctance to continue discussions.
Sangma remains optimistic about resuming talks post-elections, hoping to make significant progress on the disputes by building on previous discussions. The outcome of these meetings could be crucial in settling the protracted tensions between the two neighboring states.
The impending discussions are highly anticipated, with both leaders looking to resolve these issues, which pose a significant challenge for their respective administrations. As historical tensions persist, the resumption of these talks offers a potential pathway to a lasting resolution for both states.
