Heartwarming Rescue: Asiatic Pangolin and Pangopup Find Freedom in D. Ering WLS Sanctuary
PASIGHAT: Amidst the tradition of hunting in East Siang District, a couple from Bamin village, Taying Taduk and Smti Yale Taduk, took a different path by rescuing an Asiatic Pangolin and its baby, known as a pangopup, from their farm. Instead of ignoring the endangered animals’ plight, they handed them over to the Range Forest Officer at Anchalghat Wildlife Range, part of the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary Division, in Pasighat. This compassionate act serves as a commendable example amid the rampant threat to wildlife in the region.
The rescued pangolin and its pangopup were later released safely into the sanctuary, emphasizing the sanctuary’s role in providing a refuge for these threatened creatures. The Divisional Forest Officer, Kempy Ete, along with RFO Orin Perme, praised the Tadu ks for their efforts and called on other villagers to aid in wildlife conservation and combat wildlife crimes.
Asiatic Pangolins are highly vulnerable due to illegal hunting and trafficking, primarily for their scales, used in traditional Asian medicine and jewelry. Their declining population is a global concern, categorized as endangered on the IUCN Red List and protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Moreover, international trade of these creatures is prohibited under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).
East Siang District has been increasingly involved in wildlife conservation, with several rescued pangolins, including those from Silluk village, being rehabilitated in the protected environments of D. Ering WLS. The sanctuary is not only a sanctuary for pangolins but a research hotspot for zoologists and conservationists.
The heartening actions by the Tadu ks highlight the importance of local participation in wildlife conservation, urging communities to safeguard endangered species like the pangolin from the threats of poaching and habitat loss.
