Outrageous or Hilarious: Ex-Selector Slams BCCI’s Controversial Decision on ‘WAGs’ Tour Restrictions
BCCI Limits Player Family Travel Amid Performance Concerns
New Delhi, Jan 15: In a move that has sparked criticism, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has imposed restrictions on the duration that wives and girlfriends of players can accompany them on tours extending over a month. This decision follows India’s lackluster performance in the recent series against Australia.
The BCCI’s new regulation allows family members to join players for up to 14 days on tours lasting more than 45 days, while tours shorter than this will see a restricted window of just seven days for family visits. This decision emerged from a review meeting in Mumbai, attended by BCCI officials, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and team captain Rohit Sharma.
A former national selector has openly criticized the BCCI’s decision, describing it as “shocking and laughable.” He argued that rather than focusing on family involvement, changes in the team lineup were expected, with the anticipation of introducing or promoting new players to improve team performance.
"This move seems like a joke. Instead of addressing on-field issues with new talent, the focus has been misdirected," the former selector commented.
Officials defending the decision argue that the presence of family members, especially on overseas tours, can potentially distract players, impacting their performance. In tandem with this regulation, the BCCI has also instituted a policy mandating all players to travel with the team, curbing the recent trend of players opting for separate travel arrangements, which the board views as detrimental to team unity and discipline.
The new restrictions underline the BCCI’s attempts to prioritize team cohesion and discipline, aiming to mitigate distractions and enhance performance. However, the decision has ignited a debate about its effectiveness and the underlying issues in team dynamics.
