Impressive Triumph: Three Northeast States Shine Bright in Jal Shakti Ministry’s Groundwater Quality Report
Guwahati, Jan 15: A groundwater quality report from the Ministry of Jal Shakti has commended the Northeastern states for their exemplary maintenance of safe drinking water, even as other parts of India face rising contamination concerns. The comprehensive study, which analyzed data from over 15,000 monitoring stations across the nation, lauds states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Jammu & Kashmir for adhering to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for drinking water quality.
These regions have notably avoided major violations involving hazardous contaminants like arsenic and fluoride, which significantly threaten other parts of the country. Unlike these affected areas, the Northeast stands as a beacon of clean and safe groundwater. However, the report underscores ongoing vigilance, highlighting that rapid urbanization and population growth, particularly in Assam, could potentially threaten these achievements.
Jal Shakti Minister CR Paatil, during the winter session of Parliament in December 2024, pointed out the severity of arsenic contamination in Assam, identifying it as one of the worst affected states, ranking third after Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. His Rajya Sabha remarks noted arsenic presence in 21 districts of Assam and isolated pockets in 230 districts across 25 states.
While the Northeast generally excels in maintaining sound water standards, the persistent issue of arsenic contamination, especially in Assam, remains a pressing concern that demands targeted solutions. Sustained efforts are crucial to protect these water resources amidst the challenges posed by urbanization and population pressures.
