Celebrations of Paush Sankranti Bring Community Together in Lankamura
Agartala, 14th January 2025: The Lankamura area came alive with the vibrant celebration of Paush Sankranti, a festival deeply rooted in Bengali culture and observed as one of the 13 festivals throughout the 12 months of the Bengali calendar. With residents both young and old participating, the festivity was marked by communal chanting of the holy name of the Lord, fostering a spirit of unity and devotion for the welfare of society.
The day began with homes adorning their courtyards with intricate Alpana designs, setting a sacred ambiance as incense and flowers were offered in prayers. Residents, led by an elderly community member, carried out the traditional practice of Harinam Sankirtan, a ritual intended for societal welfare as per Hindu scriptures. This year, just like every other, the residents gathered with a collective aim to uphold this auspicious custom.
Women from 8 to 80 years old, equipped with khols and brass cymbals, organized the pulley arrangements and joined the Sankirtan, filling the neighborhoods with melodic chants. Young boys and girls were not left behind; school-aged children eagerly engaged in the Harir Lut Sankirtan, enthusiastically chanting while collecting traditional loot items such as tillai, batasa, kadma, oranges, and apples. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and joy as these young participants joined the chorus of community voices.
The celebration of Paush Sankranti transformed Lankamura into a hub of activity, with groups moving from house to house throughout the day and night. Householders keenly awaited their turn to host these chanting groups, which encouraged a sense of shared celebration and unity.
This vibrant festival stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage and communal harmony that characterizes the region, ensuring that the traditions of Paush Sankranti continue to be cherished and celebrated with enthusiasm year after year.
