Exciting Milestone: India’s First Urban Public Transport Ropeway Nears Completion, Trials Set to Begin Soon!
Varanasi, January 15 (IANS): Significant advancements are underway for Uttar Pradesh’s pioneering urban public transport ropeway project in Varanasi, with preparations entering the final stages. Three out of the five planned stations—Cantt, Vidyapeeth, and Rathyatra—are nearing readiness for trial runs, showcasing impressive progress. The ropeway wire is already drawn across the supporting pillars, setting the stage for upcoming tests.
Initiated under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this ambitious project had its foundation stone laid in March 2023. It represents a transformative solution aimed at alleviating urban congestion while offering an eco-friendly transit option in the bustling spiritual hub of Varanasi. Built at an estimated cost of around Rs 650 crore, the ropeway is anticipated to revolutionize local commute.
Kaushalraj Sharma, the Divisional Commissioner of Varanasi, articulated optimism about the completion schedule. He affirmed that trial operations are slated to begin within a month, lasting approximately 1.5 months to rectify any deficiencies. He also projected the full project completion timeframe to be within six months.
Further expansion is on the horizon with the second phase, slated for completion by May, bringing additional stations into the network. The Girijaghar station construction shows notable advancement, whereas work at the Godaulia station is set to commence soon. Constraints posed by limited space in Godaulia necessitated the creative solution of a ground-level, three-story station occupying 450 square meters. The design innovation includes passenger platforms on the first level, while the upper floors will house a shopping complex, ensuring the accommodation of 6,000 daily commuters.
Modifications in the design include two staircases to optimize passenger flow, made by NHLML (National Highway Logistics Management Limited), the executing company, which is now fully prepared for the imminent trial run.
This landmark development is set to position Varanasi as the first city in India to operate a public transport ropeway, revolutionizing travel for both residents and tourists alike.
