Exclusive Insight: Captivating EAM Calls with Spain’s King Felipe VI and President Sanchez During Monumental Madrid Visit
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently concluded a significant diplomatic visit to Spain, marking his first official visit to Madrid as Minister. During the two-day visit from January 13-14, Jaishankar engaged in high-level discussions with King Felipe VI and Spanish President Pedro Sanchez. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the ongoing high-level exchanges and aimed to build on the momentum from President Sanchez’s visit to India the previous year to further enhance bilateral relations.
In a productive meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, the leaders reviewed various aspects of bilateral cooperation and discussed regional and global issues of mutual interest. They commended progress in diverse sectors, including trade, economy, defense, security, tourism, and cultural ties, and explored collaboration opportunities in emerging areas such as digital technology, AI, renewable energy, and space.
A keynote address by Jaishankar at the 9th Annual Conference of Spanish Ambassadors highlighted a foreign policy reflective of national identity. He also engaged with Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles, acknowledging the significance of the C-295 Aircraft Assembly line plant in Vadodara as a cornerstone project for deepening defense cooperation.
The visit also featured a conference organized by the Spain India Council Foundation, where Jaishankar and Albares addressed prominent Spanish companies, think-tanks, and intellectuals on strategic alliances in a changing world. In a symbolic gesture, Jaishankar paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Madrid and engaged with the Indian diaspora in Spain.
The visit yielded the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) on sports cooperation and sustainable urban development, underscoring the commitment to bilateral collaboration. This visit, following closely after President Sanchez’s trip to India, underscores both nations’ dedication to deepening diplomatic ties and fostering long-term engagement, according to official statements.
