Beloved Kannada Star, R Vijaykumar, Passes Away at 77: A Heartfelt Farewell to a Cinematic Legend
Veteran Kannada actor R Vijaykumar, aged 77, passed away on January 15, 2025, after battling a lung infection at Manipal Hospital in Malleswaram. His son, Rohit, confirmed that Vijaykumar succumbed to multiple organ failure at around 9:30 am. The actor’s health issues, initially thought to be due to a seasonal weather change, rapidly worsened over the past week.
Vijaykumar made his acting debut in the 1975 film “Beluvalada Madilalli” and went on to feature in 269 Kannada films. Additionally, he served as an assistant director in nearly 80 films, showcasing his versatile talents in the industry. Beyond his film career, Vijaykumar gained significant recognition for his work in theatre, particularly for the play “Samsaradalli Sarigama,” which he both directed and acted in. His theatre group, Yashasvi, performed the play over 1,390 times, reaching audiences not only in Bengaluru but also in cities including Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi, and Mumbai.
Fans will have the opportunity to pay their respects at Vijaykumar’s residence in Mahalakshmipuram until 10 pm tonight, and a public viewing is scheduled for tomorrow from 10:30 am to 11:30 am at Ravindra Kalakshetra, organized by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce. Following the viewing, his last rites will be performed at Chamarajpet Crematorium around noon.
This tragic loss marks the end of an illustrious career of a beloved actor who left an indelible mark on both the Kannada film and theatre industries. His contributions to stage and screen will be remembered and celebrated by fans and peers alike.
