DIMAPUR, JANUARY 13 (MExN): The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has raised alarm over the deteriorating condition of Dimapur Railway Station. A report by Nagaland Post on January 13 highlights ongoing neglect by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) and the state government, leading to substantial disrepair and underutilization of the station. Despite being a significant revenue generator for NFR since its inception in 1903, the station remains overlooked.
Handling 7,000 to 8,000 passengers daily post-COVID-19, the Dimapur station has yet to see adequate development. None of its 40+ long-distance trains originate from Dimapur. Major trains like the Jan Shatabdi, BG Express, and Nagaland Express have been moved elsewhere under dubious circumstances.
The neglect is compounded by redevelopment and land encroachment issues. A Rs 283 crore project aimed at transforming the station into a world-class facility is jeopardized, with nearly 30 hectares of NFR land encroached upon. This, combined with poor coordination between NFR and the state government, has stalled progress. The absence of a double railway track further contributes to inefficiencies, causing delays and necessitating stops for slower trains.
The DNSU has called for immediate intervention by both NFR and the state government to resolve the land encroachment, ensuring availability for the redevelopment project. They demand a return of long-distance trains to accommodate growing passenger needs and insist on transparency and accountability in executing the Rs 283 crore plan.
In their statement, DNSU urges stakeholders to unite and take swift action to prevent further neglect of the station. “The future of Dimapur Railway Station depends on our collective efforts,” the union stated, emphasizing the need for prompt resolution to safeguard this crucial transport hub for Nagaland.
