Thrilling Triumph: Shillong to Radiate Excitement as Host of Two International Football Matches in March – Northeast News
Shillong is gearing up for a landmark moment in football, as it prepares to host two international matches at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in March. This event is a significant breakthrough for the city, known for its fervent football culture but has never before hosted international matches on its soil.
Initially, it was announced that Shillong would stage an AFC Asian Cup qualifying match between India and Bangladesh on March 25. However, plans have now expanded to include another thrilling match between India and the Maldives, slated for either March 19 or 20. This announcement was made by Hamletson Dohling, president of the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA), who confirmed that the idea was formally proposed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey has secured approval from the Meghalaya government for the matches, marking significant progress for the region traditionally overlooked by international football events. On January 20, officials from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will conduct an inspection of the stadium to ensure it meets international standards. Approval from the AFC will officially designate Shillong as the venue for these high-stakes fixtures.
The news has electrified football fans across the region, with social media buzzing with anticipation. For many, watching top-tier international teams play locally is a long-awaited dream come true. This development is predicted to significantly bolster Shillong’s status within Indian football and enhance its reputation as an emerging football hub in India.
Hosting these matches is expected to not only highlight the prowess of the national teams but also provide the city’s vibrant football culture an invaluable opportunity to shine on the global stage. Successful hosting could pave the way for future international events, bringing further recognition and support to football in Meghalaya and Northeast India.
