Disappointing Start for Ram Charan & Shankar’s Game Changer: A Shocking Box Office Letdown on Day One in India
“Game Changer,” a much-anticipated Telugu film, experienced a lackluster debut at the Indian box office, amassing an estimated Rs. 60 crore on its opening day. While this figure might be impressive for films in other languages, Telugu cinema’s typical frontloaded nature means this start was underwhelming, particularly given the film’s substantial budget, which demanded a more robust launch.
Despite high expectations, the film stumbled across various regions. In the Telugu states, the first-day collection barely exceeded Rs. 40 crore, falling short of the Rs. 60-65 crore target. Coastal Andhra provided a sliver of relief due to fervent early morning fan shows, yet regular show occupancies remained below 50%. Additionally, the film’s performance in Tamil Nadu and Kerala was notably poor. Director Shankar, known for his stellar track record, faced a setback with “Game Changer,” which failed to impress, collecting less than Rs. 3 crore in these regions combined. This is a stark contrast to his previous film “I,” which pulled in similar numbers in Kerala alone a decade ago, when the market was much smaller. The sluggish Pre-Pongal business in Tamil Nadu offers a partial explanation, but it doesn’t completely account for the disappointing start.
Interestingly, the Hindi version emerged as the best performer among the various language releases, earning Rs. 7 crore NETT on its first day. However, in the grand scheme of its widespread expectations, these numbers were still modest.
In terms of regional breakdown, the collections were Rs. 42.50 cr. for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Rs. 15 cr. in Nizam, Rs. 7.50 cr. in Ceded, Rs. 20 cr. in Andhra, Rs. 4.25 cr. in Karnataka, Rs. 2.50 cr. in Tamil Nadu, and a mere Rs. 0.25 cr. in Kerala. The rest of India contributed Rs. 10 cr., culminating in a total of Rs. 59.50 cr. in India.
