Legendary Indian singer P. Jayachandran, renowned for his exceptional contribution to the music industry, passed away in Thrissur on Thursday night at the age of 80. Jayachandran, who was battling a terminal illness, fell unconscious at home and could not be revived despite being rushed to the hospital. Over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, he recorded over 16,000 songs across multiple languages, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous accolades, including the National Award for Best Singer, five Kerala State Awards, and two Tamil Nadu State Awards.
In 2020, he was honored with the prestigious J.C. Daniel Prize, the highest film award in Kerala, recognizing his outstanding contribution to the film industry. Born into the Cochin Royal family on March 3, 1944, Jayachandran graduated in Zoology before devoting himself entirely to music, a move that would define his legacy. He made his Malayalam film singing debut in 1965 and never looked back, even as he shared the industry stage with another legendary figure, K.J. Yesudas. Their relationship, marked by mutual respect, dates back to their first meeting at the inaugural State School Youth festival in 1958.
