Shocking Decision: Assam Fisheries Revokes Doloni Beel Lease Over Unpaid Dues of Rs 14 Lakh!
The Assam Fisheries Development Corporation (AFDC) has officially terminated the contract for Doloni Beel Meen Mahal in Jogighopa, Bongaigaon district, due to contractor Gopal Sarkar’s failure to pay Rs 14 lakh in due revenue. Sarkar, from Chalantapara 1st Block village, had managed the Meen Mahal since February 16, 2019. Despite generating substantial income from fish sales, he neglected to fulfill his financial obligations to the department.
AFDC consistently reminded Sarkar of his outstanding payments, culminating in the cancellation of his contract on January 4, 2025, under Clause 32. Consequently, Sarkar’s deposit was forfeited, and an official memo was issued to reclaim possession of the Meen Mahal for the corporation. The memo further warned of additional actions if the overdue revenue remained unpaid.
Despite these steps, it appears Sarkar continues to illicitly collect revenue from the facility, raising suspicions over the Bongaigaon District Fisheries Development Department’s failure to enforce AFDC’s directive. Allegations have emerged suggesting Sarkar employs Assam Police personnel to facilitate his unauthorized operations at the Meen Mahal, even post-contract termination.
This ongoing situation has sparked widespread concern regarding the management of Assam’s fisheries resources, as illegal revenue activities persist amid administrative lapses. With the significant harvest festival Magh Bihu Uruka approaching, worries intensify that Sarkar might seize the occasion to unlawfully harvest and sell fish from the facility.
In response, AFDC has disseminated copies of its directive to various departments, aiming to halt Sarkar’s unauthorized activities and ensure the recovery of overdue payments. This decisive action underscores the need for stringent oversight and accountability in managing the state’s fisheries, safeguarding its valuable resources from exploitation.
