World Bank’s $35M Boost: Transformative Education Project Empowers Meghalaya’s Youth with Hope
The World Bank has launched a significant educational project to support 500,000 adolescents in Meghalaya in transitioning smoothly from school to the workforce. Named MPOWER (Meghalaya Multisectoral Project for Adolescent Wellbeing, Empowerment and Resilience), the initiative addresses the state’s worrying dropout rates. In Meghalaya, 11% of students exit school at the upper primary level, which is three times the national average, while secondary school dropout rates are at 22%, nearly double the country’s average.
Central to MPOWER is an integrated strategy to bridge learning gaps in reading and mathematics for students from grades 6 to 12. Additionally, the program offers mental health support, career guidance, and life skills training to both current students and those who have dropped out. Auguste Tano Kouamé, World Bank’s Country Director for India, highlighted that the project builds on successful strategies from other states like Jharkhand. It also draws inspiration from youth engagement initiatives in Tanzania and Bangladesh, which have effectively reduced dropout rates.
Beyond educational challenges, Meghalaya’s young population, constituting 24% of the state, grapples with issues like substance abuse, early marriage, and teenage pregnancy, complicating school retention efforts. MPOWER seeks to tackle these issues by setting up community clubs, mentoring programs, and online platforms to involve parents and students. It will also include sexual health education to prevent teenage pregnancies and promote school completion.
In collaboration with the Meghalaya State Skills Development Society, the project will offer business skills training to aspiring entrepreneurs and youth who are out-of-school. The International Bank of Reconstruction and Development funds the initiative with a loan that offers a 15-year maturity period, including a 5-year grace period. This holistic project aims to empower Meghalaya’s youth for a better future, both educationally and socially.
