Extraordinary Steppe Eagles in Assam: Witness Their Astonishing Hunting Mastery
The Vulture Breeding and Conservation Centre (VCBC) has released intriguing insights into the hunting behaviors of Steppe eagles, migratory raptors known as the “Hunters in the Sky.” Scientists Jay Gore and Sachin Ranade documented these behaviors, which are now detailed in the esteemed journal Indian Birds. The Steppe eagles migrate to India during winter, retreating to northern countries, such as Russia and Mongolia, for breeding in summer. These formidable birds, recognized as the national birds of Kazakhstan and Egypt, are adept predators, feeding on insects, reptiles, and small mammals, while also scavenging carrion. Their competitive nature allows them to assert dominance over other raptors, like buzzards and kites, and they are often seen flying alongside vulture flocks.
The VCBC team uncovered remarkable findings at Rani, Kamrup, where Steppe eagles were observed engaging in midair hunting of small birds, such as swifts, capturing and consuming them on the wing. Despite their substantial size, with a weight between 2.5 to 5 kg and wingspans exceeding 8 feet, the eagles exhibited exceptional agility. This aerial hunting tactic represents a novel addition to our understanding of Steppe eagles, as noted by Ranade. Observing these behaviors was particularly challenging due to the altitude and unpredictability of each hunt.
This discovery highlights the dietary adaptability of Steppe eagles, emphasizing their resilience and survival strategy in the wild. Ranade pointed out that such observations are crucial in enhancing scientific knowledge about these majestic raptors, marking a significant contribution to the field of ornithology. Through diligent observation with binoculars, the team’s effort in documenting this behavior sheds light on the dynamic ecological roles of Steppe eagles, furthering science’s comprehension of these apex predators’ hunting prowess and adaptability.
