Epic Clash in Guwahati: Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Ignites ISL 2024-25 – A Thrilling Showdown in Northeast News
Guwahati: The much-anticipated Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 will now take place at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati, Assam, on January 11. Originally scheduled for Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, the match was relocated due to insufficient security measures.
The derby was initially planned for Kolkata but was moved after the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate expressed concerns about managing security during the Gangasagar Mela, scheduled from January 10 to 18. The event requires significant police presence, making it difficult to allocate between 1100 and 1400 personnel needed for the match at Salt Lake Stadium.
Discussions about rescheduling the derby were held, but the ISL’s governing body, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), opted to maintain the original date. Mohun Bagan considered Jamshedpur, Delhi, and Guwahati as alternative venues, with Guwahati being the most feasible. The ISL television crew’s presence in Guwahati for the Northeast United vs. Punjab FC match on January 10 facilitated the decision to host the derby there the following day.
Reports of shifting or postponing the derby had surfaced during Mohun Bagan’s final home game against Kerala Blasters on December 14. With the ISL’s league phase set to conclude by March 12, ensuring the Indian national team has ample preparation time for the Asian Cup qualifier against Bangladesh on March 25 was also a factor in maintaining the derby’s schedule.
In previous encounters this season, Mohun Bagan, who top the ISL standings, emerged victorious against East Bengal with a 2-0 win in the first leg back in October. East Bengal currently sits at 11th in the league standings.
