Breaking News: Unveiling Hope and New Beginnings as Assam Sees 23 CAA Citizenship Applications, 2 Triumph
As of now, only two individuals in Assam have been granted citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) of 2019, despite the Indian government’s acceptance of applications since March last year. The CAA aims to provide citizenship to Hindus, Christians, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs, and Parsis who entered India from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before March 31, 2014. In Assam, 24 applications have been received from 23 individuals, one of whom applied twice.
The application process involves a detailed scrutiny by district-level committees, followed by an approval from a state-level committee. Applicants must apply through an online portal provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs, submit documentation indicating their entry date into India, and procure a certificate from a reputable community institution in their country of origin. A valid or expired passport and other documents like registration certificates, birth certificates, and identity cards from the country of origin are also required.
However, many foreigners in Assam find it challenging to produce such documentation, as they often entered the country illegally and settled there. Additionally, a number of these migrants have already sought inclusion in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as Indian citizens, complicating their status further. The ongoing Supreme Court petitions against the CAA add to the uncertainty, leading many Bangladeshi migrants to refrain from acknowledging their foreign origin, as they face the risk of being uprooted from their established lives in India.
The situation remains complex and sensitive, as migrants weigh the risks of revealing their true origins amid ongoing legal challenges and societal pressures.
