Furious Locals Demand Action: Manu-Chailengta Highway Blocked in Desperate Plea for Clean Drinking Water
Agartala, 8th January 2025 – In a powerful demonstration against a relentless water crisis, locals led by a women’s group blocked the Manu-Chailengta National Highway, stopping traffic entirely. This protest was fueled by an urgent shortage of drinking water affecting the area for over three months, pushing residents to a breaking point.
Local residents expressed frustration at the absence of effective action, stating, "The situation has become unbearable. Despite informing our MLA and the Water Resources Department, nothing has changed. This protest is our last resort."
Reports confirm that residents had contacted the Water Resources Department about the crisis. Even after assurances, no concrete solutions emerged, aggravating the community’s dissatisfaction. Consequently, a determined group of women organized the early-morning demonstration to demand immediate action and highlight the critical nature of their predicament.
A representative from the women’s group emphasized that their actions were a matter of survival, not merely inconvenience. "We had no choice but to take this step. Authorities need to grasp the severity of our suffering," she declared.
As the highway filled with halted vehicles, police arrived to mediate with the protestors. After extended discussions and receiving promises from authorities to address the pressing issue promptly, the blockade was lifted, allowing traffic to continue.
A police officer speaking to the media acknowledged the residents’ concerns, assuring that their demands had been conveyed to higher authorities and that a resolution would be forthcoming.
This incident underscores the dire need for a sustainable solution to the water crisis, highlighting the deep-rooted issues faced by the local community and their determination to assert their right to basic necessities.
