New Zealand Cricket Legend Martin Guptill Announces Emotional Retirement from International Stage
New Zealand cricketer Martin Guptill announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday, while planning to continue participating in T20 leagues globally. At 38, Guptill, who last represented New Zealand in 2022, now captains the Auckland Aces in this season’s Super Smash.
Upon retiring, Guptill expressed gratitude for fulfilling his childhood dream of playing 367 matches for New Zealand. He acknowledged his manager Leanne McGoldrick and thanked his wife Laura and their children, attributing much of his success to their unwavering support throughout his career.
Guptill debuted internationally in 2009 and made history as the first New Zealand men’s batter to score an ODI double-century with a remarkable 237 not-out in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final against the West Indies. He holds three of New Zealand’s top four individual ODI scores and is renowned for his run-out of M.S. Dhoni during the 2019 World Cup semi-final triumph over India.
The New Zealand Cricket Board plans to honor Guptill’s distinguished career during an ODI against Sri Lanka at Eden Park in Auckland on January 11, acknowledging his status as the Blackcaps’ leading run-scorer at the venue.
New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham praised Guptill’s world-class skills, particularly his ball striking and fielding, noting the important matches he helped win. Latham expressed hope for Guptill’s presence in future cricket events.
Guptill remains one of New Zealand’s most prolific batters, remembered not only for his records and achievements but also for his impact on the field and his remarkable sportsmanship.
