South Korea Unites in Passionate Rallies: Emotional Clashes and Support for Yoon’s Impeachment Continue Near Presidential Residence
Seoul, January 5 (IANS) — Tens of thousands convened near the Presidential residence in Seoul on Sunday, amid growing tensions surrounding the potential detention of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) is handling the investigation into Yoon’s brief imposition of martial law. As the Monday deadline looms, the CIO faces a decision: execute the warrant for Yoon’s formal detention or release him.
Sunday marked the third consecutive day of protests, both in support of and against Yoon. Demonstrators advocating for his detention rallied near the presidential residence, pledging to continue their demonstration. Meanwhile, Yoon’s supporters, gathered approximately 400 meters away at Hangangjin subway station, demanded the dismissal of the impeachment motion and his return to office. The situation remained peaceful as police set up barriers and deployed buses to separate the two factions.
The CIO previously attempted unsuccessfully to detain Yoon on Friday, culminating in a six-hour standoff with the Presidential Security Service. Investigators withdrew, citing safety concerns. Another attempt to serve the warrant is anticipated on Monday. The CIO is reportedly considering reissuing the warrant to extend its validity or filing a new one to pursue formal charges against Yoon.
Yoon has consistently refused to cooperate with the investigation, contesting the CIO’s legal authority to probe the matter. In a recent statement, Yoon’s lawyer announced plans to file a complaint with the prosecution, seeking an investigation into the anti-corruption agency’s chief and other police officials involved in the warrant attempt.
As the situation unfolds, the eyes of South Korea and the world remain fixed on the looming deadline and the potential implications of Yoon’s detention.
