Empowering Farmers: Government’s Ambitious Drive for Agricultural Self-Sufficiency and Doubling Incomes
Agartala, January 5, 2025: At the 53rd Annual Conference of the Tripura Agricultural Graduates Association in Agartala’s Nazrul Kalakshetra, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath reiterated Tripura’s commitment to advancing agricultural self-sufficiency and boosting farmer incomes. This promise aligns with the state government’s ongoing efforts since assuming power in 2017-18 under the BJP’s leadership.
Minister Nath shared impressive strides in farmer income, noting an increase from ₹6,000 to ₹13,000 per month. He emphasized the government’s dedication to doubling this figure and enhancing agricultural productivity, despite challenges posed by limited land resources. Through the introduction of modern farming practices and the issuance of soil health cards, Tripura is working towards achieving food self-sufficiency.
The minister proudly highlighted that three districts have reached self-sufficiency in food production, with three more close to this goal. Two districts, however, still lag behind. Additionally, Tripura’s rice production has outperformed even that of neighboring West Bengal. Despite this achievement, recent floods have adversely affected the current year’s harvest, resulting in considerable losses. In response, the agriculture department promptly supplied seeds, saplings, and other essential materials to support affected farmers.
Looking ahead, Minister Nath outlined future priorities: promoting palm oil cultivation, organic farming, and other sustainable agricultural practices to fortify the sector further. These initiatives are poised to support the state in tackling ongoing agricultural challenges and ensuring long-term viability and growth.
Through continued innovation and support, Tripura aims to solidify its agricultural development and maintain its trajectory towards a prosperous farming community.
