Fierce Showdown in Vadodara: Intense Infighting Erupts Among BJP Leaders in City & District President Polls
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s nomination process to appoint a new president for Vadodara’s city unit turned contentious when two senior leaders from different factions engaged in a heated argument at the party’s office. The incident occurred as former Deputy Mayor Sunita Shukla and ex-corporator Gopi Talati awaited their turns to submit nominations. Talati is vying for the city unit president position, while Shukla, the current vice-president, supports sitting president Dr. Vijay Shah’s re-election.
The clash escalated when Shukla accused Talati of using inappropriate language during a conversation with his supporters, which she claimed insulted her faction. Talati defended himself, asserting that Shukla’s allegations were unfounded and likely motivated by her perception of him as a threat to her preferred leader. He insisted that all party leaders follow the same value system.
While 44 candidates have submitted their applications, the final decision rests with the state executive. Election officer Kushalsinh Padheriya confirmed that all applications were completed in compliance with criteria such as age, criminal record, and party discipline. The executive committee will consult local leaders before making an announcement.
Other candidates for the city unit presidency include Jigar Inamdar, former Mayor Sunil Solanki, and current general secretary Satyan Kulabkar. Additionally, past Mayors Dr. Jigisha Sheth and Bharat Shah have expressed interest. In a similar process for Vadodara district, 43 leaders, including current president Satish Patel and former district party president Ashwin Patel, have applied.
The party hinted that it might choose a president who did not submit a nomination if deemed necessary. Key considerations for the selection include geographical representation and caste dynamics. The selection process, viewed as a democratic exercise within the BJP, occurs every three years.
