Brace Yourself: Delightful Rain and Temperature Drop Expected by January 7th
As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), winter typically covers January and February across India. However, in regions such as Gangtok, winter starts much earlier, often by the end of October. According to IMD Gangtok head, Gopinath Raha, January is traditionally the coldest month for the area with current temperatures dropping to 6°C at night and 8°C during the day, marking a significant decrease from recent years.
A notable weather change is anticipated soon, with rainfall predicted for Gangtok starting January 6 due to snowfall in North Sikkim. The region is expected to see light to moderate rain on January 7 and 8, leading to further temperature dips. Sikkim is experiencing its lowest average temperatures since 2019, a trend influenced by western disturbances that may bring additional snow and rainfall.
Gangtok also witnessed its longest dry spell from December 8 to 31, lasting 24 days. In terms of rainfall, June 2024 was the wettest month with a 66% increase from the long-term average rainfall, while the highest temperatures, recorded on May 26 and September 23, were 26.8°C.
This weather forecast underscores significant climatic shifts in the region, prompting residents to prepare for cooler and wetter conditions in the days ahead.
