Intense Fog Paralyzes Travel: Flights Grounded, Trains Halted, and Air Quality Plummets
New Delhi: On Saturday, a dense fog blanketed New Delhi as a severe cold wave affected various city areas, significantly disrupting daily routines. The harsh weather forced many homeless individuals to find refuge in night shelters across the capital. Travelers faced major inconveniences due to significant disruptions in transportation; over 90 flights were delayed and more than 50 trains ran late.
Flight operations at Delhi Airport were severely impacted by the dense fog. Authorities at the airport advised passengers to consult their respective airlines for the latest information. The situation was grim, with over 90 flights delayed in the morning, while airports in Srinagar, Chandigarh, Agra, Lucknow, Amritsar, Hindon, and Gwalior also reported zero visibility conditions. On the preceding day, over 200 flights had been delayed due to near-zero visibility at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
In a series of updates on X (formerly Twitter), Delhi Airport cautioned passengers about the ongoing disruptions. They noted, “Due to dense fog at Delhi Airport, flight operations are impacted,” and advised travelers to stay updated through their airlines. Furthermore, another advisory highlighted that flights not compliant with CAT III standards might be further affected.
Various airlines like Indigo, Air India, and SpiceJet echoed these concerns, reporting disruptions across Northern India due to low visibility.
The train services faced similar challenges. More than 50 trains en route to Delhi were delayed by the thick fog. The 22436 New Delhi Vande Bharat Express was delayed by over four hours, while the Varanasi Vande Bharat Express encountered a significant 14-hour delay. Additionally, the New Delhi Vande Bharat Express and the Anand Vihar Terminal Superfast Express were delayed by up to eight and seven hours, respectively.
The severe weather conditions in Delhi have continued to inconvenience thousands of travelers, underscoring the challenges posed by extreme climatic events in disrupting transportation networks in the region.
