Heartfelt Support: Guwahati Water Board Sanctions Rs 4.8 Lakh Relief for Families Affected by Kharguli Pipeline Burst in Assam
The Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board has approved a compensation of Rs 4.80 lakh for four residents impacted by a pipeline burst in Kharguli on January 2, 2025. Each individual, specifically Anowar Hussain, Abu Fateh Ahmed, Moumin Seikh, and Binita Das, will receive Rs 1.20 lakh as compensation for significant property damage incurred due to the incident. This decision, documented by Managing Director Pallav Gopal Jha, IAS, is part of the JICA-assisted Greater Guwahati Water Supply Project (GWSP).
The incident in Kharguli underscores a larger, concerning trend of water infrastructure failures in Guwahati, which has experienced multiple pipeline bursts in different areas like Rajgarh, Maligaon, and near Gauhati Commerce College on RG Baruah Road in the past month. These recurring issues raise critical concerns about the city’s water management and infrastructure resilience.
The authorization of the compensation was executed under Section 80 of the Guwahati Metropolitan Drinking Water & Sewerage Board Act, 2009. By allocating these funds, the Board acknowledges the severity of the damages suffered by the affected residents and aims to provide some relief amidst the ongoing challenges surrounding the city’s water infrastructure.
This string of pipeline failures not only highlights the urgent need for improved water management systems in Guwahati but also calls for greater accountability and preventive measures to safeguard against future incidents. The Board’s action reflects an awareness of the gravity of these issues, although systemic improvements remain a critical necessity to prevent recurrence and ensure the safety and well-being of residents throughout the city.
