Governor of Sikkim’s Inspiring Doka-la Visit: Strengthening Environmental Stewardship and Honoring the Army’s Heroic Role

Governor Om Prakash Mathur of Sikkim initiated his official duties for the year with a pivotal trip to Doka-la, a notable region for the 2017 India-China standoff, located at an elevation of 15,000 feet. Joining him was Rajasthan’s Minister of Forest and Environment, Sanjay Sharma.

The tour kicked off at 8th Mile JN Road, where Governor Mathur received a warm welcome from local residents, Panchayat and Zilla Panchayat members from Kyongnosla, and officials from the Forest Department and Sikkim Police. In a gesture underscoring environmental emphasis, the Governor and the Minister planted an oak tree as part of a broader sustainability initiative. During his visit, Governor Mathur underscored the crucial role of tree plantation for environmental sustainability, engaging actively in discussions on regional development and conservation efforts.

Upon reaching Doka-la, he was greeted by Major General M.S. Rathore, General Officer Commanding of the 17th Mountain Division, along with other senior military officials. In a heartfelt interaction, the Governor expressed deep gratitude towards the Army personnel for their unwavering commitment to protecting the nation’s borders and maintaining national security.

Highlighting the potential for tourism and development in the region, the Governor also visited Kupup, home to the world’s highest golf course. On his return journey, he stopped at Dichu Village, where he engaged with the local community. Villagers shared their concerns and needs, to which the Governor pledged support from the Raj Bhavan to address their issues.

This visit highlights Governor Mathur’s dedication to fostering regional development and environmental conservation while recognizing the pivotal contributions of the Indian Army. The tour not only enhanced the relationship between the government and local communities but also demonstrated a commitment to tackling regional challenges and promoting Sikkim’s progress.
