Arunachal CM Pema Khandu Applauds Inspiring Forest Conservation Achievements – Northeast News
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has commended the state’s forest department and stakeholders for their remarkable commitment to conserving and expanding the state’s green cover. This effort is crucial for maintaining environmental balance and supporting life, as highlighted by Khandu following the release of the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023.
The ISFR 2023 ranked Arunachal Pradesh among the top three states for forest and tree cover. Specifically, the state secured the second position with a combined forest and tree cover of 67,083 square kilometers. This places it between Madhya Pradesh, leading with 85,724 square kilometers, and Maharashtra, with 65,383 square kilometers. In terms of forest cover alone, Arunachal Pradesh also ranked second, boasting 65,882 square kilometers, trailing Madhya Pradesh’s 77,073 square kilometers but ahead of Chhattisgarh’s 55,812 square kilometers.
Khandu expressed immense pride in Arunachal Pradesh’s performance, describing the achievement as a “moment of great pride” on social media platform X. The ISFR 2023 underscored the importance of the northeastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, in India’s ecological landscape with forest covers exceeding 75%. This region, comprising Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura, plays a critical role in maintaining the country’s ecological balance.
The Chief Minister highlighted the multifaceted benefits of forests, emphasizing their role in acting as natural air filters, regulating ecosystems, and combating climate change. Forests are vital for maintaining biodiversity, protecting soil, and ensuring the water cycle, while also providing resources such as wood, fruits, and medicinal plants. Khandu urged continued dedication to conservation efforts, emphasizing the need to balance environmental preservation with developmental goals. “Choosing a greener path secures our environment and ensures sustainable development for future generations,” he stated, advocating for a healthier and more sustainable future.
