Exciting Transformation: Beloved Waterloo Records Set for a Spring Relocation and Ownership Change!
After over four decades at the helm, John Kunz, the beloved owner of Waterloo Records, has announced he’s selling the iconic store that’s been a cornerstone for Austinites since 1982. The vibrant vinyl haven will soon relocate five blocks north to a building previously occupied by Louis Shanks Furniture and later Whole Foods’ regional office. The move to 1105 North Lamar Boulevard will offer a more spacious venue, boasting 50% more space, ample parking, and a cutting-edge stage for live performances.
Kunz’s successors, Caren Kelleher, founder and CEO of Gold Rush Vinyl, and Trey Watson, CEO of Armadillo Records, intend to uphold the store’s revered legacy. Waterloo’s rich tradition of community and independent spirit will be retained, allowing the music to thrive in the heart of Austin. Kelleher expressed her enthusiasm by acknowledging Waterloo’s critical role in nurturing the physical music scene, empowering people to unplug and connect through tangible media.
Since Austin-based Endeavor acquired the strip mall location at Sixth Street and North Lamar Boulevard, including Waterloo Records, there has been speculation about future redevelopment plans. The strip mall might transform into a multistory site featuring underground parking, though Endeavor has yet to confirm these intentions.
Nonetheless, John Kunz, transitioning to chair emeritus, will focus on his passion for music without handling daily operational duties. His influence and dedication shaped Waterloo into a cultural landmark, earning accolades like “Best Record Store” from The Austin Chronicle for 40 continuous years. Waterloo has hosted intimate performances from legends like Willie Nelson, Nirvana, and Norah Jones, making it a must-visit for music enthusiasts.
Kunz, along with Kelleher and Watson, is committed to preserving Waterloo’s enduring legacy. “Change is inevitable, but honoring the traditions that have brought us success remains our priority,” Kunz remarked, signaling the beginning of an exciting new chapter while cherishing its storied past.
