Alarming Surge in Infiltration: How the Textile Industry Collapse Devastates Bangladesh – Insights from Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted a significant surge of illegal migrants from Bangladesh into India’s northeastern states following the political upheaval and ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Addressing reporters on the first day of 2025, Sarma attributed this influx largely to the downfall of Bangladesh’s textile industry, which left many workers unemployed. As a result, these workers are entering India, with some Indian textile industry owners allegedly incentivizing the illegal migration by hiring them as cheap labor.
Sarma pointed out the alarming trend, revealing that approximately 1,000 illegal migrants from the Muslim community have been detected and sent back since unrest began in Bangladesh in August 2024. Each day, 20 to 40 infiltrators are intercepted along the border, and similar numbers are spotted in Tripura. Instead of arresting them, which often results in bail, the Assam government is focusing on immediate deportation.
This issue was discussed with Home Minister Amit Shah, emphasizing the need to address the actions of industrial houses in India that are encouraging illegal entry for labor purposes. Sarma stressed the importance of curbing this practice to control the flow of illegal immigrants.
Furthermore, Sarma mentioned that during previous incidents, many such illegal migrants found employment in textile industries in Tamil Nadu. He expressed concerns about the unprecedented number of infiltrators being detected and called for strict measures to prevent industrial entities from incentivizing illegal migration.
The situation presents a serious challenge for the Indian government in managing border security and addressing the employment practices of certain industrial sectors, which appear to be exacerbating the illegal migration issue.
