In Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, a violent clash erupted between women protesters and central security forces, resulting in around 40 injuries. This incident occurred on Tuesday morning as the security forces sought to dismantle “community bunkers” in the Saibol-Twiching area, regarded by the local Kuki community as their territory. The operation to remove these unauthorized bunkers comes after recent attacks that injured four people, including a police officer. Despite this, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) Women’s Wing reported over 30 women with severe injuries, including one who lost an eye and was transferred to Guwahati for treatment.
The Kuki Women Union (KWU) stated that the area is within Kuki land and accused security forces of overstepping boundaries established to protect Kuki communities from attacks. The organization criticized the security forces’ aggressive tactics, which included alleged manhandling and use of lathis and tear-gas. Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, defended the security forces, asserting their right to operate anywhere in the state.
Additionally, the Kuki Inpi body condemned what it described as unwarranted brutality against the women. They emphasized the need for impartiality from security forces. The Kuki Women Organisation for Human Rights (KWOHR) also called for a thorough investigation into the violence and demanded accountability from the government.
This incident highlights the tense situation in Manipur, where community claims and security operations intersect, raising concerns about human rights and the conduct of central security forces in handling local disputes. The call for justice and accountability continues as the state grapples with maintaining peace and order.
