Manipur’s Uplifting Call: Kuki-Zo MLAs Fearlessly Condemn Christmas Attacks, Urge Unity and Vigilance in Sadar Hills
The leadership of the Kuki-Zo community in Sadar Hills has strongly condemned recent attacks in areas including Saibol, Twichin, Mongneljang, and S. Khonomphai, purportedly carried out by militant groups since December 24. In a unified response, the region’s three MLAs—Nemcha Kipgen, Haokholet Kipgen, and Kimneo Hangshing—denounced the aggression as “shameful and condemnable.” They asserted that these targeted regions fall under their administrative authority and rejected any interference from valley-based authorities, emphasizing their capability to govern effectively.
The Kuki-Zo leaders pointed out that their community has already endured 19 months of continuous ethnic and religious persecution. This latest spate of violence, especially during a season associated with peace and goodwill, exacerbates their suffering. Despite these challenges, they called on their community to remain vigilant and steadfast, focusing on protecting their land without resorting to retaliation.
Furthermore, the statement urged the Inter-Agency Unified Command to prevent the establishment of valley-based insurgent camps in the sensitive border areas between the hills and the valley. The Kuki-Zo leadership also cautioned state police against manipulation by radical organizations they described as acting like “Trojan horses” in the conflict.
The leadership’s statement characterized the timing of the attack over Christmas as a deliberate provocation intended to sabotage peace and reconciliation efforts. They expressed disappointment over the Meitei leadership’s failure to promote harmony, contrasting it with their own commitment to pursuing political aspirations through peaceful and legal means.
In conclusion, the Kuki-Zo leaders called for unity and resilience within their community, urging them to rise above provocations and continue their dignified struggle for justice and self-determination.
