Urgent Call for Justice: All Saints’ Cathedral Defends Mawlynnong Church Amid Controversy
The All Saints’ Cathedral in Shillong has urged the state government to take swift action against those involved in a recent incident at a church in Mawlynnong village, located in the East Khasi Hills District. Bishop Purely Lyngdoh expressed grave concern over the event, condemning it as a violation of religious freedom. He remarked, “We are very sad at what has been done in the Church at Mawlynnong, and we denounce it vehemently.”
Bishop Lyngdoh highlighted a troubling trend of similar disturbances targeting Christian institutions nationwide, attributing these to threats from certain Hindu groups. He mentioned specific threats from a Hindu organization in Assam, which has been pressing for permission from the local Durbar to conduct Puja at the Mawjymbuin Cave. The Bishop suggested these actions might reflect a coordinated effort to escalate tensions systematically.
He emphasized that the desecration incident could be part of a deliberate attempt to disrespect the tribal community and their religious practices. Stressing the importance of accountability, he urged the state government to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. According to him, holding accountable those involved is crucial for preventing future desecrations of religious sites.
The incident reflects broader concerns among Christian leaders in Meghalaya, who have been vocal about ensuring that religious sites and practices are safeguarded against external threats and that respect for diverse faiths is upheld throughout the nation. The Bishop’s call to action underscores the vital need for governmental intervention to protect religious diversity and harmony in the region.
