Celebrating Legacy: Manipur Congress Leaders Laud Manmohan Singh’s Transformative Impact on State’s Development
Manipur Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Okram Ibobi Singh, lauded former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on December 29 for his significant contributions to the development of the Northeast, particularly Manipur, during his decade-long tenure. Addressing reporters, Ibobi Singh highlighted the former PM’s genuine affinity for Manipur, as evidenced by granting the state special category status. This support spurred the construction of vital infrastructures, such as a new assembly building, high court, and civil secretariat. Manmohan Singh’s administration also spearheaded the development of infrastructure in hill districts, including the construction of district hospitals and power sub-stations.
State Congress president Keisham Meghachandra echoed these sentiments, underscoring Singh’s lasting impact on Manipur’s history. He was the first prime minister to repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the state, a move that saw its removal from seven assembly segments. Another historic achievement was the return of Kangla Fort to the people of Manipur from the Assam Rifles, meeting a longstanding demand of the local population.
The commendations came amidst a “condolence meeting” held at Congress Bhavan, where Congress leaders and workers gathered to pay floral tributes to the late former Prime Minister. These acknowledgments serve as a testament to Manmohan Singh’s enduring legacy in Manipur, characterized by progress in infrastructure and responsiveness to the state’s needs and aspirations.
