State Bank of Sikkim Seizes Hotel Sobralia in Namchi
Namchi, Dec 28, 2024: In a decisive move to address unpaid loans, the State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) has seized the assets of Hotel Sobralia in Purano Namchi. The recovery action was spearheaded by a team from SBS, including Chairman D.B. Gurung and Managing Director Phurba Wangdi Bhutia, who took possession of the hotel on Saturday morning.
The seizure follows a formal notice sent to the hotel’s owner on October 3, 2024, demanding repayment of overdue debts. This notice highlighted the bank’s intent to recover owed amounts and warned of consequent actions if the debts were not settled.
Speaking during the property takeover, Gurung and Bhutia emphasized that this is the first instance of such an action being executed in the Namchi district, marking SBS’s stringent approach towards non-compliance with loan agreements. They remarked that the move is a part of broader efforts by the bank to recoup funds outstanding from defaulters, ensuring financial stability and accountability.
This development highlights the ongoing challenges faced by local businesses in maintaining financial commitments and reflects a shift in SBS’s policy towards stricter enforcement of loan recoveries.
