Tragic Loss: Heartbreaking Dual Incidents Claim Two Lives in Assam
In a tragic series of road accidents in Assam, lives have been lost and injuries sustained, raising concerns about road safety despite a reported decrease in overall accidents. On Friday in Hailakandi, a fatal accident occurred on NH 37 near the Salchapra flyover. Rupam Roy, a 27-year-old delivery boy, lost his life, while three others suffered serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle, who is now under police interrogation, received minor injuries and is undergoing treatment at Sarojini Hospital. The identities of the injured are yet to be confirmed. Assistant Sub Inspector Badrul Haque Laskar from the Katakhal Police Outpost promptly responded to the scene, transporting the damaged vehicle for further investigation. Meanwhile, the deceased has been taken to SK Roy Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
In another unfortunate incident on Thursday, Dr. Mirzabul Huda, a young medical practitioner, was killed in a road mishap near Baihata Chariali on NH-15. The accident occurred as Dr. Huda, who hailed from Kharupetia in Darrang, was en route to his night duties at a Guwahati-based hospital. His motorcycle collided with a truck, inflicting critical injuries, and he was declared dead upon arrival at AIIMS, Changsari.
These incidents unfold against the backdrop of the Assam government’s claimed 15% reduction in road accidents and fatalities, and its announcement of a new road safety drive to continue until Magh Bihu in January. The recent tragedies underscore the urgent need for effective implementation of safety measures to prevent further loss of life on Assam’s roads.
