PM Modi Ignites Hope: Launches Historic Ken-Betwa River Linking Project in Madhya Pradesh
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Madhya Pradesh today to mark the 100th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee by inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for numerous development initiatives in Khajuraho. A significant highlight of the visit is the commencement of the Ken-Betwa river linking project, India’s first interlinking of rivers under the national perspective plan. This ambitious project, costing Rs 44,605 crores, will be primarily funded by the Central Government (90%) with the remainder covered by the state governments of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
The Ken-Betwa project is set to revolutionize agricultural and water resources in the region, providing irrigation to over 8 lakh hectares, benefiting more than 7 lakh farmer families across 2,000 villages in 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh. It will also offer drinking water facilities to around 44 lakh people, generate 103 MW of hydropower, and 27 MW of solar power. Moreover, the project aims to improve groundwater levels in the drought-prone Bundelkhand region, fostering industrialization, boosting investments, and increasing tourism and employment opportunities.
Additionally, Prime Minister Modi will unveil a commemorative stamp and coin in honor of Vajpayee’s birth centenary and lay the foundation for 1,153 Atal Gram Sushasan buildings. These structures are expected to enhance governance at the local level by supporting the effective functioning of Gram Panchayats.
The event will also feature key dignitaries including Madhya Pradesh Governor Mangubhai Patel, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, and Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patel. The tripartite Memorandum of Understanding for the Ken-Betwa project was originally signed on March 22, 2021. Prime Minister Modi is expected to arrive in Khajuraho around noon for this significant occasion, which underscores the government’s commitment to regional development and sustainable resource management.
