Sikkim Congress Demands Sincere Apology from Amit Shah for Disparaging Remarks on Ambedkar
The Sikkim Pradesh Congress Committee (SPCC) has strongly criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah for recent remarks made in Parliament, which they argue undermine the legacy of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Under the leadership of President Gopal Chettri, the SPCC demanded an immediate public apology from Shah, following a statement he reportedly made suggesting that invoking the name of God is more beneficial than invoking the name of Dr. Ambedkar.
The SPCC characterized Shah’s remarks as “disrespectful” and a “direct insult” to Dr. Ambedkar, who is widely revered for his advocacy of justice, equality, and liberty, especially for marginalized communities. Gopal Chettri expressed shock that a senior figure like Amit Shah would make such disparaging comments, particularly within the formal setting of Parliament. Chettri argued that the remarks not only disrespected Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy but also undermined the foundational principles of the Indian Constitution.
In response, the SPCC has called for an unconditional public apology from Amit Shah and urged the Prime Minister to address the issue, emphasizing the need for preventing similar incidents in the future. The committee stressed the importance of the BJP government reaffirming its commitment to constitutional values of justice, equality, and fraternity, rather than diminishing them through careless statements.
Additionally, the SPCC encouraged democratic forces across the nation to resist any attempts to erode the legacy of Dr. Ambedkar and the constitutional framework he established. They highlighted the importance of preserving and respecting Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation’s social and legal fabric. Through these actions, SPCC seeks to protect the ethos of the Constitution and honor the significant impact of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Indian society.
