Amit Shah Leads Historic Bru Settlement Visit Amidst Congress’ Fiery Protest Against Ambedkar ‘Insult’
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to visit the Bru settlement camp at Bruhapara on Sunday and address a public gathering in Masuraipara, Dhalai district, following his participation in the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council in Tripura on Saturday. Shah will also deliver remarks at the national cooperative convention at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan. Notably, this visit marks Shah’s first trip to the camp since the landmark Bru settlement agreement in July 2018. The Home Minister, who played a pivotal role in resolving the two-decade-long refugee crisis, aims to assess current conditions firsthand. The crisis began in 1997 when approximately 37,000 Bru refugees fled ethnic violence in Mizoram, seeking refuge in Tripura’s relief camps. Despite nine repatriation efforts that saw about 5,000 return, fresh hostilities in 2009 drove many to seek asylum again in Tripura. Shah’s visit underscores the ongoing efforts to address and stabilize the situation for the displaced Bru community.
