India’s Inspiring Leap: Surging to 39th in WEF Tourism Development Index Among 119 Nations
New Delhi, December 20 (IANS) – India has climbed to 39th position among 119 countries in the Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI) 2024, as per the World Economic Forum (WEF). This marks an improvement from the previous index, where India was ranked 54th. The jump can be attributed to enhanced infrastructure and government initiatives aimed at boosting tourism. A revision in WEF’s methodology resulted in adjusting India’s 2021 rank to 38th, according to Union Minister for Tourism and Culture, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
Key government programs such as ‘Swadesh Darshan,’ ‘PRASHAD,’ and financial assistance schemes for infrastructure development have been pivotal in advancing India’s tourism landscape. To facilitate medical tourism, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched the Advantage Healthcare India portal. This “One-Stop” portal serves international travelers seeking medical treatment in India, reinforcing India’s reputation as a hub for affordable medical tourism. President Droupadi Murmu highlighted the country’s progress in this sector, emphasizing the integral role of Indian doctors in attracting foreign patients.
India’s rich cultural heritage, featuring over 5,000 years of history, 43 World Heritage Sites, and thousands of significant monuments, continues to strengthen its global tourism appeal. At the ‘Rising Rajasthan’ summit, Minister Shekhawat underscored how Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, ‘Virasat Bhi Vikas Bhi’ (heritage and development), has fostered a blend of historical preservation and modern achievements. The country has seen impressive improvements, with a 150,000 km road network, 500 new air routes, 150 new airports, and high-speed trains like Vande Bharat, all contributing to the robust growth of the tourism sector.
India’s tourism industry, buoyed by strategic enhancements and a vast heritage, is positioned for further growth, drawing ever more global visitors to its diverse offerings.
