Urgent Call to Action: Rohit Demands Clarity on Shami’s Fitness from NCA
Brisbane, Dec 18: In a candid disclosure, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has urged the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to offer clarity on the fitness status of fast bowler Mohammed Shami. The call for transparency comes amidst the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, where Sharma emphasized his reluctance to field Shami without absolute certainty about his fitness.
Mohammed Shami, who has been battling injuries, recently re-entered the competitive arena during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and is slated to represent Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy starting this Saturday. However, concerns about his physical condition persist, notably with swelling reported in his knees during SMAT.
“We rely on the NCA for vital updates regarding player fitness. It’s crucial that they communicate clearly about Shami’s rehab progress,” Rohit expressed within the post-match briefing following the pink ball Test in Adelaide. The need for definitive updates from the academy underscored his remarks.
Sharma highlighted the risks involved in rushing Shami back into the lineup without assured fitness. “The last thing we need is a player having to withdraw mid-game due to unresolved issues. We have experienced the disruption caused by mid-match exits and are keen to avoid such scenarios,” he stated firmly.
The 34-year-old Shami has been on a long recovery journey following an ankle injury that warranted surgery, putting him out of action since the ODI World Cup final in November 2023. As India continues its campaign in the Border-Gavaskar series, player welfare takes precedence, with Rohit making it clear that Shami will only be back in action when his fitness is beyond doubt. Such vigilance underscores the team’s strategic approach to maintaining performance while safeguarding the health of its key players.
