Outrage Erupts: Youth Congress Condemns Mridul Islam’s Tragic Death, Burns Assam CM’s Effigy in Defiant Protest
The Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged a large-scale protest following the death of Congress member Mridul Islam, demanding justice and accountability. The protest took place in Sribhumi city, where demonstrators expressed their anger by burning an effigy of the Chief Minister. Subhajit Chakraborty, the State Secretary of the Youth Congress, strongly criticized the government’s handling of the situation and sought immediate accountability for Islam’s death. He emphasized their call for a judicial inquiry into the incident, asserting the party’s commitment to continue their fight for justice.
According to Chakraborty, Islam died following the allegedly forceful suppression of a previously organized protest rally by Pradesh Congress, addressing issues like smart meters, the Adani controversy, and unrest in Manipur. He claimed that following an order from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Islam was killed by being targeted with tear gas by the Assam Police. Chakraborty condemned the tragic occurrence and accused the Chief Minister of betraying the Congress by joining the BJP, promising political repercussions in the 2026 elections.
