Exciting Tripura Initiative: Month-Long Paddy Procurement Drive Empowers Farmers – Northeast News
Tripura has launched a month-long paddy procurement drive to strengthen its agricultural sector. The initiative was inaugurated by Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath in Madhabari, West Tripura. This year, the state aims to purchase 21,000 metric tonnes of paddy directly from farmers at an increased minimum support price (MSP) of Rs. 23 per kilogram, compared to last year’s Rs. 21.83. The procurement will occur at 51 centers statewide.
Minister Chowdhury emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the rural economy by ensuring direct procurement from farmers. He noted that such initiatives have been more effectively implemented since the BJP took power, contrasting with previous regimes. Since 2018, the government has invested Rs. 397 crore in paddy procurement, benefiting over 1,07,000 farmers. Despite recent floods, Chowdhury remains optimistic about achieving this year’s targets.
The state government is also focusing on farmer welfare through schemes like the PM-Kisan program, offering Rs. 6,000 annually to each registered farmer. Agriculture Minister Nath highlighted the importance of maximizing land utilization due to limited cultivable land. He stressed that the government is committed to helping farmers become self-reliant, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to double farmers’ income. The average income of Tripura’s farmers has increased from Rs. 6,580 in 2018 to Rs. 13,590 in 2023, illustrating the positive impact of these policies.
Furthermore, Nath assured financial aid for farmers impacted by recent floods, reinforcing the government’s dedication to enhancing farmers’ livelihoods. Overall, this paddy procurement drive symbolizes Tripura’s efforts to bolster its agricultural framework and improve the living standards of its farming community.
