Unveiling the Truth: Arunachal CM Denounces Misinformation Spread by Activists on 12,500 MW Siang Project – Northeast News
ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has accused external activists of misleading locals regarding the 12,500 MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, emphasizing that it encompasses more than just dam construction. Speaking at the inauguration of a sports complex in Banderdewa, Khandu claimed that misinformation was deliberately spread to sow confusion among the public about the project’s benefits to the state. He assured efforts to address these concerns, promising to present the perspectives of both state and central governments to clarify the situation.
Meanwhile, protests erupted in Komkar village, Upper Siang district, primarily led by women, who voiced worries over displacement, loss of ancestral lands, and biodiversity threats. Protesters demanded the withdrawal of security forces and suspension of project activities, accusing the government of rights violations.
Scheduled to visit Boleng in Siang district, Khandu’s trip coincides with tensions over the district administration’s controversial request for village leaders to prepare accommodations for a CAPF team conducting a pre-feasibility report in Riew village. The Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum (SIFF) and other groups have demanded the halt of these activities, insisting on obtaining proper stakeholder consent.
Critics, including activist Ebo Mili, denounced the heavy security presence as intimidation, arguing it aims to suppress opposition from affected families who have rejected the project. The complexity of the situation is intensified by a 2022 Gauhati High Court order canceling dam projects on the Siang River due to procedural lapses. Despite this, activists allege ongoing government surveys for the Siang project.
The controversy highlights the escalating pressure on the government to address public concerns and ensure transparency in approaching the project. Khandu’s forthcoming visit is seen as crucial in grappling with the challenges surrounding one of Arunachal’s major development endeavors.
