Thrilling Triumph: Three Esteemed Assam Litterateurs Celebrate Prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 Victory
The Sahitya Akademi Award 2024 has honored three notable literary figures from Assam for their exceptional contributions to multilingual literature. Sameer Tanti was awarded for his Assamese poetry collection “Pharingbore Bator Katha Jane,” Aron Raja received recognition for his Bodo novel “Swrni Thakhai,” and Dipak Kumar Sharma was acknowledged for his Sanskrit poetry collection “Bhaskaracaritam.” These awards highlight the literary excellence and the vibrant cultural tapestry of Assam.
Dipak Kumar Sharma, who is receiving the Sahitya Akademi Award for the second time, expressed profound happiness and emphasized that accolades should not be a writer’s ultimate goal. His previous award in 2018 was for translation. Speaking to The Assam Tribune, Sharma remarked, “Awards are a motivation but not the target. Continuous improvement in one’s craft matters most.” He also underscored the responsibility writers have in nurturing language and literature, encouraging his students to write in their mother tongue for more effective communication. Sharma stressed the importance of being a diligent reader to develop as a writer, noting the influence of history, philosophy, and science on a writer’s work.
Aron Raja, another celebrated awardee, expressed joy for being recognized for his thirteenth novel. Having authored 14 novels and four short stories, Raja shared how his passion for literature started during his school days and thanked his readers for their ongoing support. “I never imagined my books would reach such a level. I will continue writing as long as my health and mind permit,” Raja said, highlighting his gratitude for the recognition and his commitment to continue his literary pursuits.
This year’s awards not only showcase individual achievements but also underscore the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Assam, drawing attention to the diverse literary accomplishments from the region.
