Unveiling Truth: Scholars and Activists Unite to Confront Manipur Violence and Ignite Change
A book titled “Report on the Manipur Violence: A Historical Contextualization of State-Sponsored Ethnic Cleansing” was recently unveiled to a gathering of scholars, intellectuals, and concerned citizens amid the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which started on May 3, 2023. The event commenced with a reflective prayer by Evangelist Hoijalhing. Pu N Touthang, Finance Secretary of Kuki Inpi, Delhi, then addressed the audience, emphasizing the critical need to confront misinformation and rectify false narratives that have muddled the truth about the violence, underscoring the importance of exposing the facts.
Retired Reverend Paothang Haokip, Bishop and Deputy Moderator of the Good Shepherd Church of India, delivered an empowering prayer, drawing upon scripture for strength and encouraging courage amid adversity. Benjamin Mate, Chairman of KOHUR, introduced the book as a pivotal resource for dismantling fabricated accounts of the violence, describing it as “a shield against lies and a beacon of justice,” highlighting its significance in the quest for truth and recognition of the Kuki-Zo community.
K. Vanlalvena, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Mizoram, reinforced the historical and cultural ties between the Zo ethnic groups in his speech. He encouraged the community to convert their collective suffering into strength, viewing the crisis as an opportunity for renewal and unity. Meanwhile, Paojakhup Guite, President of the Kuki Students’ Organization, Delhi, expressed appreciation for the book’s creation. He acknowledged Benjamin Mate’s leadership and noted that the report represents a crucial moment in the pursuit of justice, with its message poised to resonate across communities.
This book serves not only as an academic resource but also as a rallying point for those seeking truth and justice amid the tumultuous situation in Manipur, aiming to foster understanding and solidarity among affected communities.
