New Delhi, December 16 (IANS) – The world of music mourns the loss of legendary tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, who passed away at the age of 73. Hussain’s family confirmed that he died from complications due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis at a hospital in San Francisco. Born on March 9, 1951, to the iconic Ustad Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain emerged as the preeminent tabla player of his generation, leaving behind an indelible mark on the global music scene.
Hussain’s illustrious six-decade career witnessed remarkable collaborations with both Indian and international artists, setting new benchmarks in the world of music fusion. In 1973, he collaborated with English guitarist John McLaughlin, violinist L. Shankar, and percussionist T.H. ‘Vikku’ Vinayakram, creating a novel blend of Indian classical music and jazz. Throughout his career, Hussain partnered with legendary Indian musicians like Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, and Shivkumar Sharma. His groundbreaking work with Western musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Charles Lloyd, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Mickey Hart, and George Harrison brought Indian classical rhythms to a wider global audience.
Zakir Hussain’s contributions to music were recognized with numerous accolades, including four Grammy Awards, with the latest being three received at the 66th Grammy Awards. His illustrious career was further honored by India’s government, which bestowed upon him the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
In October, Hussain captivated fans by sharing his experiences of the autumn season in the U.S. through social media. As news of his passing spread, an outpouring of condolences flooded social media, reflecting the tremendous impact he had on music lovers worldwide. He is survived by his wife, Antonia Minnecola, and his daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi, who carry forward his remarkable legacy.
