Transformative Breakthrough: IIM Shillong’s Inaugural International Conference on Empowering Humanity
For the first time, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong hosted the international conference LEAD-2024, themed “Empowering Humanity,” which focused on leveraging emerging technologies and analytics for development. This initiative brought together academics, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore innovative solutions to global challenges, highlighting the intersection of technology, analytics, and development.
The event emphasized the significance of partnerships to advance global objectives, aligning with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The LEAD-2024 logo, unveiled during the conference, symbolized the event’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence, analytics, and sustainability principles.
Among the dignitaries present were Prof. Viswanath Venkatesh from Virginia Tech, Prof. Somnath Mukhopadhyay of the University of Texas at El Paso, IIM Shillong Director Prof. D. P. Goyal, and LEAD 2024 Co-Chairpersons Prof. Parijat Upadhyay and Prof. Pradeep Kumar Dadabada. The pre-conference commenced with a Round Table Discussion and ended with insights from Anand of Assam Electronics Development Corporation Limited, highlighting regional technological advancements.
Throughout the event, industry leaders provided practical insights alongside academic expertise. On the first day, Prof. Viswanath Venkatesh stressed the need for research with a practical impact, while Prof. Somnath Mukhopadhyay discussed the integration of analytics for effective decision-making and management innovation.
The second day featured Prof. Suprateek Sarker, who elaborated on the role of digitalization in humanitarian efforts, sustainability, and health, and Prof. Jason Bennett Thatcher presented a masterclass on the importance of multidisciplinary research to address complex global issues such as misinformation.
Key themes included artificial intelligence, sustainable development, and innovative management practices. The conference successfully underscored the transformative potential of emerging technologies and analytics in addressing both local and global challenges.
