Major Victory: Assam Rifles Triumphantly Clears 354 Acres of Illegal Poppy Cultivation in Manipur
In a continued effort against illegal poppy cultivation along the Indo-Myanmar border, the Assam Rifles, in 2024, successfully identified and eradicated 354 acres of illegal poppy fields. These operations were concentrated in the districts of Ukhrul, Churachandpur, and Chandel, with support from the Manipur Police, Narcotics Control Bureau, district administration, and other personnel.
Under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South), Assam Rifles has reinforced its commitment to tackling the narco-trade along this border, reflecting its consistent prioritization of this issue in recent years. In a historic 2020 effort, the force identified a monumental 8,057 acres of poppy fields and destroyed 1,695 acres. The following years saw a continuation of these efforts, with 1,976 acres destroyed in 2021 from 5,610 identified acres and 715 acres eradicated in 2022 from 494 identified acres, including previously undiscovered patches. In 2023, 1,488 out of 1,735 identified acres were eradicated.
The significant decline in identified poppy fields by 2024 illustrates the success of a multi-pronged strategy by State and Central Government and Security Forces. These joint operations not only targeted cultivation but also dismantled supply chains and networks sustaining the illicit drug trade.
Assam Rifles has harnessed advanced technology, leveraging drone surveillance and intelligence from local communities and civil society organizations to enhance operational effectiveness. Beyond eradication, the Force is addressing socio-economic drivers of poppy cultivation through its “Drug-Free Manipur” initiative, conducting awareness campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of drug addiction and illegal farming.
This decisive action reaffirms Assam Rifles’ determination to ensure regional stability and security, with the press release noting the significant impact of their operations and community-focused approach in combating this ongoing issue.
