Frustration Mounts: Namdang Residents Demand Urgent Action Amid Failure of Government’s Clean Water Initiative
Amid the government’s ambitious “Har Ghar Nal, Har Ghar Jal” initiative, aimed at providing tap water in every home, residents of Namdang Old Line and Gara Line under the Kumarpatty Gaon Panchayat in Assam’s 83rd Margherita Constituency continue to grapple with the lack of access to clean drinking water. The situation is dire, especially for tea garden workers at the Namdang Tea Estate, who rely on a nearby stream contaminated with chemicals from plantation activities. This pollution exposes them to various waterborne diseases, such as skin issues, jaundice, and gastritis.
Residents have voiced their concerns over a water purification project initiated under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) several years ago, which has failed to deliver any clean water benefits to the community. Despite the completion of this JJM project, no safe drinking water has reached the area, leaving residents frustrated and disillusioned with the promises made.
The community is now calling for urgent intervention from authorities to tackle this pressing water crisis. They demand that officials take swift action to ensure the delivery of clean drinking water, as the health and well-being of Namdang residents are at risk.
Local people’s demands underline the critical need for effective and immediate solutions to resolve this long-standing issue, ensuring that the government’s initiative finally provides the much-needed resources and infrastructure for clean and safe water access in their homes.
